Hi, I’m Jennifer Barrette!
Have you ever watched a single drop of pigment hit a damp sheet of paper? It doesn’t just sit there. It travels. It pulses. It finds its own path, blurring the lines between what you intended and what the water decided to do.
That is how I’ve learned to see the world: as a living watercolor. There are vibrant washes of joy, deep granulating shadows of challenge, and those essential highlights of white paper—the moments where we simply breathe and wait.
I am Jennifer Barrette—a watercolor artist, a seeker of “happy accidents,” and your guide through this world of pigment and light.

From “The Grid” to the Flow
People often ask me: “Why watercolor? Why not the bold structure of oils or the forgiving layers of acrylics?”
My answer is always the same: Watercolor taught me how to let go. Before I picked up a brush, I lived my life in a grid. I was a professional “perfectionist”—someone who believed that if I just planned hard enough, I could control the outcome of every day. But life, as it turns out, is messy. It bleeds past the edges. It doesn’t always dry the way you expect.
I found watercolor during a season of burnout, and it saved me. It taught me that beauty doesn’t come from total control; it comes from collaboration. To paint with water is to dance with an unpredictable partner. You provide the pigment, but the water provides the soul.
This blog started as a way to document my paintings, but it has grown into something more: a space to explore how to live a “watercolor life”—fluid, honest, and unafraid of a little bleeding at the edges.
What You’ll Find in Jennifer’s Corner
Whether you’re a fellow artist with paint-stained cuticles, a beginner afraid to make the first mark, or simply someone who needs a visual deep breath, this space is for you.
1. The Behind-the-Scenes (The Messy Middle)
Social media often shows the finished, framed masterpiece. Here, I show the “ugly stage.” I’ll take you inside my studio—muddied palettes, failed sketches, and the specific moment a painting “clicks.” We’ll talk about the philosophy of art and the courage it takes to ruin a expensive piece of paper just to see “what if.”
2. Techniques & Tools (The Craft)
For those who want to pick up a brush, I’m here to demystify the medium. We’ll dive into the alchemy of colors: the difference between staining and granulating pigments, the magic of wet-on-wet techniques, and how to harness the “cauliflowers” and “blooms” that most people think are mistakes.
3. Botanical & Travel Inspiration
My heart lives outdoors. I often pack a tiny travel tin and a water brush to capture the world in real-time—the fleeting blush of a peony, the moody grey of a rain-soaked street, or the golden hour hitting an old brick wall. I’ll share my plein-air adventures and how to find “paintable moments” in your own backyard.
My Philosophy: “Honor the Bleed”
In watercolor, a “mistake” is often the most beautiful part of the painting. A stray drop of water can become a sunflare; an accidental smudge can become a distant mountain.
I want to bring that grace into our daily lives. We are so hard on ourselves for not being “sharp” or “defined.” But there is an incredible, ethereal beauty in the blur.
“Art isn’t about capturing what you see; it’s about capturing how it felt to look at it.”
On this blog, we celebrate the process over the product. We celebrate the courage to be transparent—just like the paint.
Let’s Paint Together
A blog is just a sketch until a reader adds their own color. I believe art is a conversation, and I’m so glad you’re part of mine.
